Cranked Up Colorado Vintage BMX & Vintage Mountain Bike Show Rulebook
1. Purpose
The Vintage BMX & Vintage Mountain Bike Show celebrates the history, craftsmanship, and culture of BMX and mountain biking. This event is designed to showcase restored, original, and period-correct bicycles in a respectful and family-friendly environment.
2. Eligibility
- Open to all vintage BMX and vintage mountain bikes.
- BMX bicycles must be manufactured in 1999 or earlier.
- Mountain bikes must be manufactured in 1999 or earlier.
- Any bike produced after 2000 is welcome, but would be entered into RETRO / REISSUE / OPEN Class
3. Bike Definitions
Vintage BMX:
A BMX bicycle originally designed for racing, freestyle, or dirt jumping, typically featuring 20” wheels (or micro-mini variants), and reflecting design styles from early BMX history through the late 1990s.
Vintage Mountain Bike:
A off-road bicycle designed for trail riding, typically featuring 24”, 26”, or early suspension systems, produced during the early evolution of mountain biking through 1999.
4. Registration
- All participants must complete official registration prior to display.
- Each entry must include:
- Owner name
- Bike brand, model, and year
- Category/class selection
- Brief description or history (optional but encouraged)
- Multiple bike entries per participant are allowed.
- Entry fees are non-refundable unless event is canceled.
- Entry Fees are $8.00 per bike if Pre-registered online, or $10.00 per bike at the day of the show.
- All proceeds from the show will be donated to a local bike charity.
5. Classes
Bikes will be grouped into classes such as:
- 70’s Race (Early BMX)
- 80’s Race (Mid-era BMX)
- 90’s Race (Late-era BMX)
- Cruiser 24/26” BMX
- Freestyle 1: ’83-85
- Freestyle 2: ’86-89
- Freestyle 3: ’90-99
- Retro / Reissue / Open: Any bike made after 2000 or Pit, Mini, Sidehack
- Klunker Hardtail
- Vintage Mountain Bike Hardtail (pre-2000)
- Vintage Mountain Bike Full Suspension (pre-2000)
Event organizers reserve the right to adjust classes based on attendance.
6. Judging Criteria
Bikes will be evaluated based on:
- Authenticity (original parts and correctness)
- Condition (restored or preserved state)
- Rarity
- Historical significance
- Presentation and cleanliness
- Overall impression
Judging is subjective and final decisions are made by appointed judges.
7. Awards
Award categories are:
- Best 70’s Race
- Best 80’s Race
- Best Cruiser BMX
- Best Freestyle 1
- Best Freestyle 2
- Best Freestyle 3
- Retro / Reissue / Open
- Klunker
- Best MTB Hardtail
- Best MTB Full Suspension
Awards may vary per event.
8. Safety Requirements
- No leaking fluids, unsafe structural damage, or hazardous modifications.
- Display stands are required.
- No riding in designated display or judging areas unless explicitly permitted.
9. Conduct
- All participants and attendees must behave respectfully.
- Harassment, aggressive behavior, or unsportsmanlike conduct will result in removal.
- No alcohol or illegal substances permitted in display areas unless authorized by venue policy.
10. Liability Waiver
- Participants attend and display bikes at their own risk.
- Organizers are not responsible for theft, damage, or injury.
- All entrants agree to hold event staff and sponsors harmless from claims arising from participation.
11. Setup & Display Rules
- Bikes must remain within assigned Class areas.
- Participant is responsible for bike stand to display each bike.
- No unauthorized swapping or repositioning of display tags.
- Electrical cords, stands, or props must not create hazards.
12. Judging Process
- Bikes will be reviewed during scheduled judging hours.
- Judges may inspect bikes closely and ask owners questions.
- Points system of 100 points will be used to score each bike.
- There will be THREE judges per class. Each score will be calculated and the winner will be the average score of the 3 judges.
13. Protests & Disputes
- All judging decisions are final.
- Organizers reserve the right to resolve disputes at their discretion.
14. Event Schedule
- 9:00 AM – Registration & Setup
- 10:00 AM – Gates Open to Public
- 12:30 PM – Judging Begins
- 1:30 PM – Awards Ceremony
- 2:00 PM – Event Close
15. Sponsorship & Vendor Areas
- Sponsors and vendors must follow all venue rules.
- Booth assignments are pre-approved by organizers.
- No unauthorized sales or promotions allowed.
16. Amendments
Event organizers reserve the right to modify these rules at any time for safety, clarity, or operational needs.
17. 100-Point Judging System
All bikes will be judged on a standardized 100-point scoring system to ensure fairness and consistency across all classes. Each category is scored individually and then totaled for a final score out of 100 points.
Scoring Breakdown
- Authenticity (30 points) – Correct era parts, originality, and adherence to period-correct specifications. Reproduction parts used take away points from this score.
- Condition (15 points) – Overall physical condition including wear, damage, and preservation quality.
- Restoration Quality (15 points) – Craftsmanship, paint quality, finish, and attention to detail in restorations.
- Rarity (15 points) – Scarcity of the model, production numbers, and uniqueness.
- Historical Accuracy (10 points) – Correct representation of the bike’s historical period and significance.
- Presentation (10 points) – Display quality, cleanliness, and visual impact in the show setting.
- Detail & Completeness (5 points) – Small details, decals, accessories, and overall completeness of the build.
Scoring Notes
- Judges may award partial points within each category.
- If a Judge has a bike in the class they are judging, they may NOT be eligible to Judge their own bike, in this case, the score will be determined by the other 2 Judge's average score.
- Bikes do not need to be restored to score highly; survivor bikes are judged fairly within condition and originality.
- Final score is the sum of points after deductions, then the average score of 3 judges combined are used to determine the winner.
- In the event of a tie, rarity and authenticity scores will be used as tiebreakers.
